Chicago celebrates the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

May 10 1869 - (Pre-1871 Chicago Fire) The procession was going east on Lake Street from the corner of Clark Street in Chicago celebrating the Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad's driving in four symbolic spikes (two gold spikes) to celebrate the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in Promontory Summit, Utah.

An original gold spike is at Stanford University in Stanford, California.
