He decided to proceed directly on horseback, with Mary to follow in the carriage. So, I would discount the hypothesis of anything directed at Mary (unless the purported saboteurs did not care about "collateral damage"). Poor maintenance (such as not checking for loosened bolts) could have also accounted for the accident. A forensic examination of the carriage, such as wear from vibrations, should be examined.
